X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) Testing — Polymorph Identification | Auriga Research

NABL-accredited XRD testing for pharmaceutical polymorph identification (ICH Q6A), crystallinity determination, crystal structure work, asbestos detection in talc per USP 901, phase identification in herbal raw materials, and crystallite size analysis. Powered by the Xcelerator high-speed detector at our Baddi lab — non-destructive, sample recoverable after testing.

What We Test with XRD

Six confirmed XRD application areas across pharmaceutical, cosmetic, herbal, AYUSH, and materials science samples.

Polymorph Identification & Screening

Polymorph identification and screening for pharmaceutical APIs per ICH Q6A and USP — diffraction patterns matched against ICDD/PDF references and client-supplied reference standards for unambiguous polymorphic form assignment.

Crystallinity Determination

Amorphous vs crystalline ratio determination per ICH Q6A — quantitative measurement of amorphous content in APIs, spray-dried intermediates, milled powders, and amorphous solid dispersions.

Crystal Structure Determination

Crystal structure characterisation for pharmaceutical APIs and materials science applications — unit cell parameters, space group, and lattice constants from powder diffraction data.

Asbestos in Talc — USP 901

Asbestos detection in talc-based cosmetic products per USP 901 — identification of tremolite, actinolite, and anthophyllite asbestiform minerals in cosmetic-grade talc by their characteristic diffraction patterns.

Phase Identification in Raw Materials

Phase identification and quantification in pharmaceutical and herbal raw materials — verifying mineral and inorganic ingredient composition against specification, including AYUSH bhasma mineral phase characterisation.

Crystallite Size Analysis

Crystallite size determination from peak broadening (Scherrer equation, Williamson-Hall analysis) for materials science applications — nanocrystalline materials, milled APIs, and processed inorganic powders.

CDSCO polymorph submission scope note: For a complete CDSCO drug master file polymorph package per ICH Q6A, XRPD data is typically supplemented with DSC (differential scanning calorimetry) and FTIR data. XRD alone may not be sufficient in all cases — see FTIR for the molecular fingerprint counterpart. DSC scope routed via the analytical team on request.

Instrument Specifications

XRD confirmed at the Baddi multi-disciplinary lab with the Xcelerator high-speed detector. Delhi and Bangalore XRD availability to be confirmed with the lab team before publishing.

XRD at Baddi (Confirmed)

Powder X-ray diffractometer operated at the Baddi multi-disciplinary facility supporting pharmaceutical polymorph workflows, cosmetic talc asbestos screening, and herbal raw material phase identification.

Xcelerator Detector

Xcelerator high-speed strip detector — orders of magnitude faster data acquisition than conventional point detectors, enabling rapid polymorph screening and high-throughput stability sample analysis.

Non-Destructive Technique

Sample recoverable after testing — the powder sample is unchanged by the XRD measurement and can be returned to the client or used for further downstream testing (FTIR, DSC, HPLC).

Powder XRD (PXRD) Capability

Powder XRD configuration optimised for pharmaceutical APIs, excipients, herbal raw materials, and cosmetic-grade mineral ingredients. Bragg-Brentano geometry standard; transmission and capillary modes available on request.

ICDD/PDF Reference Database

Pattern matching against ICDD/PDF (International Centre for Diffraction Data Powder Diffraction File) reference patterns plus client-supplied reference standards for polymorph and phase identification.

Delhi / Bangalore Availability

XRD availability at the Delhi flagship lab and Bangalore facility to be confirmed with the lab team before publishing. Primary XRD scope and the Xcelerator detector are confirmed at Baddi.

XRD (X-Ray Diffraction) instrument at Auriga Research

Why Auriga for XRD

Three reasons pharma, cosmetics, herbal, and medical device clients use the Auriga XRD service.

Xcelerator Detector — Rapid Screening

Xcelerator high-speed strip detector enables rapid polymorph screening across stability time points, formulation batches, and forced-degradation samples — orders of magnitude faster than conventional point-detector workflows.

Non-Destructive — Sample Integrity

Non-destructive technique preserves sample integrity for further downstream testing (FTIR, DSC, HPLC). The same precious API or stability sample can flow through multiple analytical workstreams without depletion.

NABL Reports Accepted by CDSCO

NABL-accredited XRD results accepted for CDSCO drug master file (DMF) submissions, ANDA filings, and polymorph characterisation evidence in regulatory dossiers.
